Arts and Minds – The Festival 2010
October 2010 witnessed our – and England’s – first arts and mental health festival, in conjunction with the University of Cambridge’s ‘Festival of Ideas’ and Cambridge & Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust. The Junction hosted two days of feature film, documentary, comedy and platform debate, seeking to challenge existing attitudes to mental illness and raise the level of debate about how mental health affects creativity and the birth of new ideas.
We intend that this will be the start of an annual festival for England.

The Making Mental Notes radio magazine programme is produced by and for the local mental health community, providing information, features and interviews relevant to mental health. The hour-long programme first ran on Tuesday afternoons from May 08 to May 09 live on 209 community radio on 105fm.
We recognize that this medium has potential for developing an interactive audience base locally , nationally and even internationally; it could also offer real and practical skill development for those on the production and broadcasting teams. Arts and Minds has increasingly strong ties with media companies and we look to develop high-quality work-based skills through this strand of our work.
We have supported user-focussed charity Lifecraft in their successful fundraising efforts to continue the programme. In the future we hope to help them run a similar project, with an increased reach.

The Art of Care
We plan to offer arts-based training for young carers and care workers, particularly those working within older peoples and dementia care, but also drug and alcohol and learning disability services.
Artist Training
The experience Arts and Minds has gained has shown us that there is a need for artist training to grow the capacity of arts professionals to work in the stimulating and challenging context of mental health. We will aim to develop a training package that addresses the issues for artist facilitators wanting to start work in this area, or build and refresh their existing skills.
There is a growing debate around the need for accredited practitioners. This project will enable Arts and Minds to respond quickly should accreditation become a requirement in the future.
